Kelsey Storm Is 2020 Sheldon Homecoming Scholarship Recipient

Sheldon, Iowa — A scholarship that had been scheduled to be awarded this past April, but was postponed due to the pandemic, has now been awarded.

The Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation had been scheduled to award their annual $6,000 Homecoming Scholarship at the April O’Brien County Career Day, which had been scheduled for April at Northwest Iowa Community College. Thanks to COVID-19, Career Day was one of many events that had to be scrapped this year.

Earlier this week the SCDC held a news conference, at which the 2019 Homecoming Scholarship recipients, Emily Ney and Matt Dykstra, along with the 2020 recipient, were on hand for the official Scholarship presentation, which was held in the Community Services Center.

The recipient of the 2020 SCDC Homecoming Scholarship is Kelsey Storm. Kelsey is a 2011 graduate of Sheldon High School.  She went on to graduate from Northwest Missouri State University in 2014 and University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 2018.  Kelsey is currently employed at Sanford Sheldon Medical Center as an occupational therapist.

We asked Kelsey what the $6,000 Homecoming Scholarship meant for her.

She says while she hadn’t always planned specifically to come back to Sheldon, she knew she wanted to end up in a rural area.

Storm talks about the application process for the Homecoming Scholarship.

She had this message for others who were thinking about applying for the annual scholarship.

Sheldon Development Director Curt Strouth says the SCDC is happy to have received many applications for the scholarship and are impressed with the high level of qualified and skilled individuals who applied. He says they are thankful for these Sheldon graduates that have chosen to bring their talent back to our local workforce and continue to call Sheldon home.

The Sheldon Homecoming Scholarship is available to Sheldon High School graduates who have completed college and returned to Sheldon to pursue their careers. The $6,000 scholarship is designed to help them pay off student debt incurred during their college years. 2019 marked the first year the scholarship was awarded.
