Lyon County Attorney One Of Two Nominated For District Court Judgeship

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Attorneys from Rock Rapids and Spirit Lake have been nominated for the judgeship opening created by the retirement of District Court Judge Don E. Courtney.

Eight applicants for the judgeship were interviewed Tuesday by the 3A Judicial Nominating Commission during an interview session at the Clay County Courthouse in Spencer.

Following Tuesday’s interviews, the Commission nominated Lyon County Attorney Shayne L. Mayer and Spirit Lake attorney John M. Sandy for the judgeship. The names of the pair have been forwarded to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, who has 30 days to appoint one of the nominees to be a district judge. District court judges typically hear a variety of cases including probate, felony criminal cases, dissolution of marriage, adoptions, disputes involving actions of state administrative agencies, juvenile cases and other matters. Their term of office is six years.

Judicial District 3A consists of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Palo Alto Counties.
