Rock Rapids, Iowa — We’ve all heard the advice to stay six feet away from others during the pandemic. But one area health department is emphasizing that that advice is not only for people you meet indoors.
Lyon County Public Health officials are thanking all residents that are following social distancing guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. But they say it’s important to remember to follow these guidelines even when outside.
Lyon County Public Health Director Melissa Stillson says that they encourage residents to spend time outdoors when possible because it’s beneficial to mental health and physical activity is a necessary part of a healthy lifestyle. She says that everyone needs to continue following social distancing guidelines when outdoors because close contact, even outside, can spread the virus that causes COVID-19.
Lyon County officials say that when you are spending time outdoors, you should stay in vehicles during community drive night events; avoid social gatherings in community parking lots such as businesses, churches, and schools; maintain social distancing by keeping a distance of at least six feet between yourself and anyone you encounter outdoors; and spend time outdoors alone, or only with members of your household. Lyon County health officials say, “This is not the time for team sports or recreation.”
