Sheldon, Iowa — An Illinois man who allegedly assaulted a Sheldon Police Officer during a traffic stop this past January has been shot and killed in Peoria, Illinois earlier this week.
According to online reports, Peoria, Illinois Police were called to Harrison Homes, an affordable housing complex in that Illinois city, after the report of a shooting. According to Peoria Police, 31-year old Darran Durrette, of Canton, Illinois, was taken to a Peoria hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. The Peoria County Coroner says Durrette received wounds to the abdomen and to the pelvis. He had surgery for his injuries, but died early the next morning.
On January 19th of this year, Durrette was charged after assaulting Sheldon Police Officer David Dykstra following a traffic stop in Sheldon, and fleeing in a stolen pickup truck. That vehicle was located the next day in Canton, Illinois. A warrant for his arrest was issued following the January incident in Sheldon, but Durrette had escaped arrest since that time.
