MidAmerican Energy Scam Being Pulled Again In This Area

Sheldon, Iowa — A scam that we’ve told you about before is rearing its ugly head again here in northwest Iowa.

A Sheldon business reports receiving a telephone call from a local 324-number, with the caller claiming to be from MidAmerican Energy. The scammer told the business owner that their electrical service was going to be cut off within the hour due to an unpaid bill. Fortunately, the merchant didn’t fall for the scam, told the scammer they didn’t believe the information the scammer had given was accurate and said they’d check into it, then hung up the phone and called MidAmerican Energy at the number posted on their website and listed in the phone book.

KIWA talked to MidAmerican Energy Media Relations Manager Geoff Greenwood, who tells us there are any number of scams being attempted these days.

Greenwood says MidAmerican Energy doesn’t call up demanding money.

He says if your MidAmerican payment does happen to be late their initial contact isn’t by phone.

Greenwood offers advice in dealing with scam phone calls.

He offered one more cautionary piece of advice…..DON’T trust your phone’s caller ID.

He says listen for things that should be red flags, and if you hear them, just hang up the phone.
