Hartley, Iowa — The ribbon has been cut and the new elementary school in Hartley is ready for students.
We talked to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Superintendent Patrick Carlin, who tells us about it.
(As said, “Monday night we had our ribbon cutting for our new elementary. Just one of our, kind of three-phase project here in our district. A really exciting time, had a great turn out, great to see kids back around and enjoying our new playground and the new educational environment, so it was really just a spectacular evening.”)
Carlin reminds us of the details of the project.
(as said:) “We had kind of a pretty substantial project. We had a new elementary…about 40,000 square feet come to a culmination here on Monday with the ribbon cutting. So that will be A PK-4 building and then also during the summer and the last spring months and currently, we did a substantial upgrade to our high school. We got a secured entrance, updated our office, commons area, put roofing and HVAC throughout the building, updated our industrial tech area, and then also our 5-8 building in Sanborn…that demolition has occurred a few weeks ago. So now they’re pouring footings in preparation for the new middle school that will be constructed and hopefully operable there next fall.”
He tells us what they’re doing in the interim.
(as said:) “Our 5-8 building that was in Sanborn, as you mentioned, had to be relocated. So they actually moved into our old elementary. So last year our K-4 building is now our 5-8 building. So all three of our buildings will be located in Hartley for this school year and then next year our 5-8 will move back to Sanborn.”
Carlin says that the changes have been few, and the price of the project as a whole continues to track close to what they expected. An $18.9 million bond issue for the project passed in the spring of 2018.
Carlin says contractors are on track timeline-wise as well. Classes at HMS for the 2020-21 school year start on Monday, August 24th.
