New Property Assessments Are Out

MoneyO’Brien County, Iowa — If you’re an O’Brien County property owner you should have received a notice of assessed value for your property, within the past few days.

O’Brien County Assessor Lowell Dykstra says the estimates of assessed value are made every two years.

Dykstra says the new valuations are calculated differently for residential and commercial properties than they are for agricultural property.

He says that, contrary to what some may believe, the Assessor does NOT set tax rates or collect taxes.

Dykstra says that some of this year’s assessed valuations in O’Brien County went up, while others went down.

He says that if you disagree with the amount of your assessment, there is a process to appeal that valuation.  He says the first step is to contact the O’Brien County Assessor’s Office at 712-957-3205.  He cautioned, however, that the formal review of an assessment must be done by April 25th.
