New School Year Off to a Good Start

Sheldon, Iowa – The Sheldon Community Schools Board met in regular session on Wednesday, September 11th at 5:00 pm in the high school library.

There were ten open enrollments, one educational service contract, two resignations, six contract offers, and two contract adjustments presented for consideration, all of which were approved by the Board. It was emphasized that there is still an immediate need for additional bus drivers, with scheduling flexibility available, within the district. The transportation agreement with Upper Des Moines Opportunity for Head Start was approved, as were agreements with the University of South Dakota (USD) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) for their Teacher Preparation Programs. Band Director Cliff St. Clair was recognized for being awarded the Martin Crandell High School Outstanding Director Award by his peers at the annual NWIBA Fall Meeting, and the High School’s Student Leadership Team shared their plans to help celebrate Homecoming 2019 and also highlighted some of their initiatives for the school year.

Reports on the start of the new school year were shared by each of the school’s three principals. Elementary school students will participate in Farm Safety Day on Friday, September 13th, middle school students are out collecting donations for their Color Run taking place on the 27th, and high school students are gearing up for Homecoming week, with coronation being held in the high school gym on Tuesday, September 17th at 7:30 pm. Additionally, Superintendent Cory Myer presented information to the board on Dropout Prevention funding as well as the timeline for high school cafeteria update.

In new business, there were 15 applicants this year for the Education Lane and Career Increment advancement that were approved. The Board also approved the sale of outdated and obsolete equipment. As a reminder, the Sheldon School Board election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th.
