O’Brien County Receives Mini-Grant To Help Food Pantries

Primghar, Iowa — Gardeners can help food pantries by providing produce or by teaching gardening to those who need assistance.

Kate Stewart, Community Program Coordinator with the ISU Extension office in Primghar, tells KIWA that O’Brien County is one of six counties that are receiving a mini-grant called the Growing Together Iowa Grant. She says that the grants will go to qualifying Master Gardeners.

Stewart explains that O’Brien County has four Master Gardeners.

She says there are two community gardens that these Master Gardeners take care of.

The mini-grant will go to keeping the community gardens maintained, Stewart tells us. She says the other thing the mini-grant allows is for the Master Gardeners to teach a class on gardening.

Stewarts adds the help they receive is only possible because of one thing.

Extension officials tell us that in Lyon County, the grant money will help expand the donation garden to meet the produce needs of ATLAS of Lyon County. Opportunities for food pantry clients will be provided including container gardening workshops, garden tours, and helping hours.
