One Of Three Finalists For Spencer City Manager Job Removes Himself From Consideration

Spencer, Iowa — After one candidate took his name out of consideration, the Spencer City Council has voted to interview four candidates for the vacant City Manager position instead of the three interviews that had originally been planned.

Interviews for former Hartley City Administrator/Clerk Kay Cmelik, Sibley Administrator/Economic Development Director/Utility Superintendent Glenn Anderson, and  Independence City Manager Al Roder were originally scheduled for last weekend, but were postponed due to the illness of two of the three finalists. Interviews were rescheduled for October 2nd, but now Roder has removed himself for consideration for the Spencer job.

Spencer Mayor Kevin Robinson says the list of finalists had been cut to five finalists, but the Council felt that was too many to interview, so they opted to interview the top 3.

Following a closed session Tuesday to discuss the situation, the Spencer City Council voted to interview the remaining top four candidates from their original list, if the other two candidates are still interested in the position.

Spencer officials say they’ll release the names of the final two candidates if they accept the invitation to be interviewed. Those interviews are still scheduled for October 2nd.

Spencer has been without a City Manager since Amanda Mack departed earlier this summer. Robinson says Spencer’s Budget Director is running things on an interim basis.
