Spencer, Iowa — Protests over the death of a Minnesota man at the hands of Minneapolis Police have been nightly occurrences in many larger towns and cities across the country over the past week, but now there is a protest scheduled at a northwest Iowa community.
A peaceful protest march and rally has been scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday, June 4th) in Spencer. The idea for the Spencer event came through a social media post by former Spencer resident, Jazmine Howe.
Howe says the march will begin at East Leach Park, on Spencer’s southeast side, and end at the Spencer Police Department, which is located at the north end of the downtown business District on Grand Avenue.
She stressed that this is a peaceful protest, and that her group does not condone the kind of violent outbursts that have occurred at demonstrations in other American cities.
While a peaceful protest is expected, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office posted a notice to social media that their agency along with Spencer police and “numerous other agencies from around the state” will be on hand to assist the marchers and “serve and protect the public and the protesters.”
While the protest march is expected to remain peaceful, several Spencer businesses along the march’s route could be seen boarding up windows Wednesday afternoon.
The protest march is scheduled to begin this afternoon at 5:00, and Howe tells us that it will wrap up by 9:00 pm, since she says the City of Spencer has instituted a 9:00 pm curfew to help avoid violence.
