Petition Filed Calling For Special 2nd Ward Council Election

Sheldon, Iowa — A petition to call for a special election to fill the unexpired 2nd Ward seat on the Sheldon City Council was presented to the City Office Thursday afternoon, according to City Manager Sam Kooiker.

In addition, a second letter of interest in being appointed to the position was received Thursday afternoon, according to Kooiker. He says appointment letters are due in the City Office by noon this Friday (April 16th).

Kooiker says the special election petition was received from Madeline Kopel of 407 Oak Street. The special election petition has 10 signatures, which is the minimum required number per State code. He says the petition has been submitted to O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer for review and validation. That petition can be seen by CLICKING HERE.

Kooiker says if the petition is valid, a special election would be set at the April 21 Council meeting and there would not be an appointment process. If the petition is determined to be insufficient, the appointment process will proceed, unless a new petition is received by April 21. There is also a second 14-day period for a special election petition to be circulated.

In addition to the special election petition, the City has also received a letter of interest in being appointed to the position from Ken Snyder. His is the second letter of interest to be received by the City, the first being from Sandy Johnson.
