Petition Filed To Force Vote On Utility Franchise Agreements

Sheldon, Iowa — A petition with 50 signatures was presented to the Sheldon City Clerk’s Office at 10:50 am Thursday September 12th, designed to force a referendum on the proposed electric and gas franchises between the City of Sheldon and MidAmerican Energy.

At their last meeting, after hearing from residents who had opposed the proposed 5% Franchise Fees, the Sheldon City Council voted to approve the franchise agreements without those proposed franchise fees. The petition submitted Thursday morning forces the matter to a vote of Sheldon residents.

Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker provided KIWA with a copy of the petition filed Thursday morning. To view that petition, CLICK HERE

Kooiker also provided us with the summary of the GAS FRANCHISE AGREEMENT, the ELECTRIC FRANCHISE AGREEMENT, the FRANCHISE GAS PUBLIC NOTICE, and the FRANCHISE ELECTRIC PUBLIC NOTICE.

Kooiker says the item will be on the Council agenda for consideration on Wednesday, September 18th at 4:30 pm.

O’Brien County Auditor Barb Rohwer tells KIWA that in order for the measure to be included in the regular City/School election November 5th, the City of Sheldon would need to submit the referendum specifics to her office by Friday, September 20th, or within two days of next Wednesday’s council meeting.
