Pluim Reappointed As Sioux County Magistrate

Orange City, Iowa — A Sioux County Magistrate has been reappointed to that post for an additional term of service.

When they met recently, the Sioux County Magistrate Nominating Commission reappointed Dan Pluim as a part-time Magistrate to serve in Sioux County. Pluim’s current term expires and his new term begins on August 1st.

Pluim, of Orange City, was appointed to serve Sioux County in 1989. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1977 from Dordt College and his law degree in 1979 from the University of Iowa. He graduated with high honors. He served as assistant Sioux County attorney in 1979 and now practices law with a private firm. Pluim is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Sioux County Bar Association, Low Fee Panel. He is married and has four children.

Magistrates serve part-time and have jurisdiction over simple misdemeanors, including scheduled violations, county and municipal infractions, and small claims cases. Magistrates have authority to issue search warrants, conduct preliminary hearings, and hear certain involuntary hospitalization and juvenile matters.  Magistrates may also be assigned by the Chief Judge to work in counties within the District other than their appointed county.
