Positive COVID Tests Down, Vaccination Rates Up

Northwest Iowa — Positive COVID test results in the four-county area of Lyon, Osceola, Sioux and O’Brien counties are down in the past seven days when compared to the previous week, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Lyon and Osceola counties each had an increase in positive results when compared to the week before. Lyon County reports 30 new positive tests, that’s up from 18 the week before. In Osceola County, 21 new positive test results were reported, compared to 18 the previous week. O’Brien and Sioux Counties saw fewer positive tests during the past seven days when compared to the previous week. O’Brien reported 33 new positives, compared to 60 the week before. In Sioux County, 59 new positive tests were reported this week, compared to 66 the previous week.

The best news from the weekly report is that there have been no additional COVID-related deaths in the four-county area during the past seven days. That news is tempered by the fact that 203 of our friends and neighbors in the four-county area have perished from COVID-related illnesses since the pandemic began; 78 in Sioux County, 63 in O’Brien County, 44 in Lyon County and 18 in Osceola County.

Adult COVID vaccination rates continue to climb this week. 61.2% of O’Brien County adults are now fully-vaccinated, compared to 61.0% in last week’s report. In Osceola County, 54.7% of adults are fully vaccinated, compared to 54.5% one week ago. 52.3% of Sioux County adults are now fully vaccinated, compared to 52.1% last week. In Lyon County, 51.8% of adult residents are fully vaccinated, compared to 51.6% a week earlier.

Buena Vista County, here in northwest Iowa, continues to hold the statewide record for having the highest percentage of fully vaccinated adults at 81.2%, compared to 80.9% one week ago.

Davis County, in far southeast Iowa, continues to hold the distinction of having the fewest fully-vaccinated adult residents. The IDPH reports 47.3% of adults in that county are fully vaccinated, compared with 47.0% one week ago.
