Northwest Iowa — Unofficial vote totals are in for Tuesday’s Primary Elections in Iowa. Here is a look at the contested races from around the KIWA broadcast area.
On the Republican ticket in O’Brien County, Dennis Vanden Hull won the County Supervisor District 4 seat with 69.17% of the vote. In District 5, incumbent Dan Friedrichsen won, taking 66.61% of the vote. There were no Democrats or Libertarian Party candidates on the O’Brien County ballot for races at the county level.

In Osceola County there was just one county-wide contested race, and that was on the Republican ticket for Supervisor District 1. LeRoy DeBoer was the winner, garnering 62.68% of the vote.

Lyon County saw a few contested races in Tuesday’s Primary. On the Republican ticket, incumbent County Attorney Shayne Mayer won, taking 70.42% of the vote. County Supervisor District 1, Joshua Feucht won a 3-way race, garnering 53.08% of the vote. For Supervisor District 4, Jerry Birkey was the winner, taking 55.78% of the vote, and in Supervisor District 5 there was a tie. Both candidates, Steve Herman and Kirk Peters received 255 votes each.

In Sioux County, there were a trio of couty-wide races, all on the Republican ticket. For County Recorder, Jessica Kooiker won a 3-way race, taking 63.74% of the vote. County Supervisor District 2 was won by Jerry Muilenberg, who took 52.94% of the vote. There was a 5-way race in Supervisor District 5, where Carl Vande Weerd garnered the most votes, taking 38.28% of the ballots cast.

Voters went to the polls in Iowa Senate District 1 to select their choice to fill that seat which is currently held by Ocheyedan independent David Johnson, who opted not to seek re-election. No Democrats had their names on the ballot in the Primary for that seat. The Republican ballot featured a 3-way race between Zach Whiting, Jesse Wolfe and Brad Price. Voters in the 1st Senate District, which is comprised of Lyon, Osceola, Dickinson, Clay and Palo Alto chose Zach Whiting, who garnered 62.4% of the vote.
All results are unofficial. The don’t become official until the results are canvassed by the County Supervisors in each county.
