Primghar Food Pantry Could Use Your Donations

Primghar, Iowa — This time of year, people are thinking about food and about giving. It reminds many that there are food pantries in northwest Iowa that could use our help.

We talked with Brenda Collier of Upper Des Moines Opportunity in Primghar, where they have a food bank. Collier gives us an update on their inventory and usage.

(as said:) “We’re getting donations in daily, but they’re also going out just as fast as they’re coming in. So we’re like in need of spaghetti sauces and noodles and stuff like that. And our refrigerators are empty. We have nothing in our refrigerators at this point. So it’s been staying pretty steady and busy in here and as you know, our food bank is open Tuesdays and Thursdays for food. So yesterday was pretty busy in here.”

She says while they have had refrigerators for a while, it’s something people may not know.

(as said:) “We have an amazing dairy refrigerator so we can take milk and cheese and butter and we also have four other refrigerators that we usually keep some eggs or fresh vegetables …stuff like that. The refrigerator jellos, but we can take anything in our refrigerators actually.”

According to Collier, people needn’t worry that the food will go bad before people can get it.

(as said:) “I think people are hesitant to donate it because they don’t know that we have the space for it and ours goes out so fast that we don’t waste a lot here.”
