Rain Continues to Slow What Little Harvest There Is Left, Improves Moisture Levels

Northwest Iowa — Moderate rainfall last week slowed harvest, as Iowa farmers had an average of 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Ag Statistics Service.

Four days were suitable for fieldwork last week in northwest Iowa.

Field activities included harvesting row crops, completing fall tillage, baling stalks, and applying fall fertilizer and manure. Livestock producers reported muddy feedlots.

95 percent of corn has been harvested for grain statewide, which is four days ahead of last year, and 12 days ahead of the five-year average. 98 percent of corn in northwest Iowa has been harvested for grain. Moisture content of field corn harvested for grain in the state held steady at 14 percent.

42 percent of topsoil in northwest Iowa has adequate moisture, an increase of four percent from the previous week.

37 percent of northwest Iowa subsoil had adequate moisture, up three percent from the prior week.
