Recalled Workers Must Return To Work, Can’t Keep Getting Unemployment

Statewide Iowa — Some businesses here in northwest Iowa, as well as other parts of the state, will reopen Friday and that could impact the relief benefits of some workers.

Iowa Workforce Development says if you have been placed on a temporary layoff related to the coronavirus, you must return to work when recalled by your employer. The agency says it will be considered a “voluntary quit” if you don’t and try to continue collecting unemployment.

There are some exceptions, including if you have tested positive for COVID-19 and are experiencing symptoms; medical complications from the virus render you unable to perform essential job duties; a member of your household has been diagnosed with COVID-19, or you are providing care for a member of your household who was diagnosed with COVID-19. IWD says anyone in these special circumstances is strongly encourages to work with their employer on how best to handle the situation.
