Rock Rapids Man Charged With Arson Takes Plea Agreement

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man has been sentenced after being charged with arson on July 7th of this year.

Lyon County authorities say the arrest was made after investigation into events that took place in the early hours of July 7th. They say that according to their initial investigation into an underage drinking party at a Rock Rapids residence, an altercation took place between 20-year old Alex Bradley McIlvenna and another partygoer. Authorities report that several hours after the altercation the Rock Rapids Fire Department and Lyon County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car fire in the 500 block of South Randall Street in Rock Rapids. According to the Sheriff’s Office, an investigation at the scene of the car fire determined that the vehicle had intentionally been set on fire.

Deputies say a charge of 2nd Degree Arson, a Class C Felony, was filed against McIlvenna on Sunday, July 29th.

McIlvenna, who’s now 21 years old, decided to take a plea bargain and plead guilty to an amended charge of third-degree criminal mischief on Tuesday (October 30th). Judge David Lester sentenced him to 120 days in jail and a suspended fine of $625 plus other costs and fees.
