Northwest Iowa — An attorney from Rock Rapids, another from Spencer and two from Spirit Lake are among eight lawyers hoping to be appointed as a District Court Judge.
The attorneys are vying to replace District Court Judge Don E. Courtney when he retires on October 1st. According to information released by the District Court indicates Shayne L. Mayer of Rock Rapids, Bridget L. Bailey of Spencer, and Michael H. Johnson and John M. Sandy both of Spirit Lake will be interviewed for the position next week in Spencer.
In addition to the four from our immediate area, Conrad F. Meis of Algona, Ashley A. Herrig of Storm Lake, Lisa K. Mazurek of Cherokee and Todd M. Holmes of Algona will all be interviewed next Tuesday, July 21st. Interviews will be conducted by the 3A District Court Judicial Nominating Commission, and will be held at the Clay County Courthouse in Spencer.
Following the applicant interviews, deliberations and voting will be held to determine the names of the two candidates who will be submitted to Governor Kim Reynolds for her consideration.
Each applicant and each member of the public attending the interviews will be required to comply with the existing Covid-19 protocol established by the Clay County Board of Supervisors for entry into the Clay County Courthouse, including a screening process at the entry door to the courthouse, and the wearing of a face mask or face shield while in the courthouse.
In addition, each applicant and each member of the public will be required to comply with the provisions of the July 9, 2020, Order of the Iowa Supreme Court In the Matter of Resuming In Person Court Services during Covid-19, including, but not limited to, seating in marked areas within the courtroom to ensure physical distancing, limited admission to the courtroom to ensure physical distancing, and the wearing of a face mask or face shield in all court-controlled areas. Each applicant and each member of the public is encouraged to bring their own face mask or face shield with them to the courthouse. If an applicant or a member of the public arrives at the courthouse without a face mask or face shield, a face mask will be provided to them.
