Sales Tax Holiday Is Friday And Saturday

Statewide Iowa — Get your shopping list ready as the annual Iowa sales tax holiday is this Friday and Saturday. Iowa Department of Revenue spokesman John Fuller says it gives you a break on some clothing and shoes.

There are other items you wear that won’t be tax-free.

Fuller says you can go online to find out exactly what qualifies for the tax break.

Fuller says the sales tax holiday is always on the first Friday and Saturday of August every year.

The two-day sales tax break for approved items starts at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and runs through midnight Saturday.

And — two caveats:

While it is often called “Tax Free Weekend,” it is NOT the whole weekend. Again, it is ONLY on Friday and Saturday.

Secondly, while parents are often encouraged to do school shopping during the Sales Tax Holiday, school SUPPLIES, such as pencils, notebooks, crayons, and the like, are NOT tax-free. It’s only clothing and shoes.

And the chambers of commerce of your local towns would ask that you shop small — and check local merchants first.
