Sheldon, Iowa — Fifty years ago, if you had been in an accident or had a medical emergency in the Sheldon area, your trip to the hospital would have been very different from what it is today. Nowadays, in those situations, the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (known locally as “SCAT”) is there to serve you. And they have been for almost 50 years.
We talked to Dianne Wolthuizen with SCAT, and she says the community is being invited to help them celebrate their 50th this Saturday, August 14th.
She says they are also having a supper for SCAT members and previous members and their spouses at 5:30 p.m. at the LLRC. Other than that meal, she says everyone is welcome to come out and help them celebrate on Saturday from 2 p.m. until it gets dark.
Kristin Haan, also with SCAT tells us how SCAT got started 50 years ago.
She says they continued their efforts the next year.
Haan says that before SCAT, transportation was done differently. She says she can’t say for sure if it was done in Sheldon, but the common way to transport patients to hospitals at that time was via a hearse from a local funeral home.
