Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon Community Schools Board of Education had a full agenda at Monday’s meetings. The first meeting, which began at 5:00 pm was the Board’s Annual Meeting in which they finished up all of last year’s Board business. The second meeting, which opened at 5:30 pm was the Organizational Meeting for the new Board.
The Organizational Meeting began the new Board’s year, with the election, and swearing in, of officers for the coming year, as well as swearing in the recently-elected Board members. The Board reelected Kecia Hickman as President, and Susan Rensink as Vice President. Recently elected Board members sworn in were Susan Rensink, and Lori Richards. Richards was elected to fill the At-Large Board position. Incumbent Randy Merley did not seek reelection to that post in the September school elections. In addition Mark Brown was named the District’s representative to the O’Brien County Conference Board, and Kecia Hickman will represent the Board on the Sioux County Conference Board. Susan Rensink was named as the Board’s representative on the Sheldon Education Foundation.
The Board also decided to return their regular monthly board meetings to the second Wednesday of the month at 5:00 pm. A year ago they moved their meetings from the second Wednesday to the second Monday of the month, but decided at Monday’s meeting that Wednesday’s seem to work better.
The Board got their first look at the Draft version of the 2018-2019 School Calendar, with Superintendent Robin Spears telling the Board that was still a lot of work to be done on the calendar.
In other action, the Board appointed Tom Whorley of the Whorley Heidman Law Firm as the District’s legal counsel for the coming year, and named Citizen’s State Bank, Northwestern Bank, Ashton State Bank, Peoples Bank, and Iowa State Bank as depositories for District funds for the coming year.
In addition to the resignation of Robin Spears as District Superintendent, which becomes effective June 30th next year, resignations were also accepted from Carla Kleinwolterink as Head Softball Coach, Kim Peterson as Middle School Food Service Worker, and Jocelyn Wollmuth as an Elementary Associate.
The next regular meeting of the Sheldon School Board is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15th at 5:00 pm in the high school library.
