Lyon County, Iowa — There will soon be more options for senior dining in Lyon County.
The main senior dining option is Dinner Date in Rock Rapids, which is subsidized by the area agency on aging, Elderbridge.
According to Shari Kirkland, who runs the Rock Rapids program, the meals used to be served at the Forster Community Center, but a while back they started serving them from Kirkland’s business, Shari’s Kitchen. When they started, they were serving some meals from there, but Kirkland says since COVID hit, almost all the meals switched to a to-go or home-delivered format (called Meals on Wheels). She says the meals are subsidized so people pay $4.25 to $6.75 or whatever they can afford. Kirkland tells us some people don’t pay anything at all.
She says they also provide an option to be billed monthly.
According to Kirkland, they were going to Larchwood frequently for other aspects of their business, so they have now decided to offer home-delivered meals in Larchwood. For more information, she says you can call her at 712-472-4609.
On the other end of the county, a weekly meal had been served at the George Community Rooms. Lucius Johnson from Last Call Saloon in George has announced that he will be offering the weekly meals soon. Johnson says another establishment had been offering the meals but ran into a licensing issue.
So the George Senior Meals will start on Tuesday, March 23rd. He says it is a weekly meal and will be served only on Tuesdays from 11:30 to 12:30 at the George Community Rooms. It’s seven dollars per meal, and the meals are not subsidized. You can make reservations by calling the Last Call Saloon at 712-475-3313. The meals are basically for those age 60 and over.
Johnson tells us they will also offer to-go meals, so if you are shut-in, you could possibly have a friend or relative pick up a meal for you.
Reservations are needed the Friday before the Tuesday meal, and you can make them by calling 712-475-3313. The first meal on March 23rd will be hot beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, and a dessert.
