Several County Candidates Face Primary Challenges

Northwest Iowa — The filing date has come and gone for candidates to get their names on the ballot for the June 5th, 2018 Iowa Primary, and some area candidates are facing challenges.

In O’Brien County, there will be two contested races for County Board of Supervisors’ seats. For the District 4 chair currently held by Republican Tom Farnsworth, he will be challenged for the Republican nomination by Dennis Vanden Hull. For Board of Supervisors, District 5, incumbent Dan Friedrichsen is being challenged for the Republican nomination by Dennis Fogelman. Missy Hattermann is running unopposed for the GOP nomination for County Treasurer. Incumbent Phyllis Rohlfsen didn’t file papers. Incumbent County Attorney Micah Schreurs did not file papers, and running unopposed for the Republican nomination for that position is Rachael M. Becker. Incumbent Republican County Recorder Susan Smith is also unopposed for the Republican nomination for that position. At the county level, no Democrats filed for their party’s nomination in O’Brien County.

In Sioux County, two people are running for the Republican nomination for Board of Supervisors, District 2. They are Arlyn Kleinwolterink and Jerry Muilenburg, both of Orange City. There are five candidates running for the GOP nomination for Board of Supervisors, District 5, which is in the Hull and Rock Valley area. They are Ted Salazar, Carl Vande Weerd, Warren Vander Pol, Ken Nielsen, and Howard J. Van Ginkel. There are also three candidates who want to be the Republican nominee for County Recorder in Sioux County. They are Kathleen Mulder and Kathyrn C. Wetter, both of Orange City, and Jessica Kooiker of Boyden. County Attorney Thomas Kunstle and County Treasurer Randall J. Jacobsma are both running unopposed for the Republican nomination to their offices. At the county level, no Democrats filed for their party’s nomination in Sioux County.

In Osceola County, no Democrats filed for any nomination either. There, there are two candidates for the Republican nomination to the District 1 Board of Supervisor’s chair. They are incumbent LeRoy E. De Boer and challenger Rochelle Buchman. The other four races have no challengers for the Republican nomination. They are the incumbent Third District Supervisor, Michael Schulte; the incumbent County Treasurer, Becky S. Marco; the incumbent County Recorder, Debora A. Van Beest, and the incumbent County Attorney, Nolan Michael McGowan.

In Lyon County, three people are running for the Republican nomination for County Board of Supervisors, District 1. They are Joshua A Feucht, Randy Simons, and Chris Viereck, all of Larchwood. For County Supervisor, District 4, incumbent Randy Bosch is facing a challenge from current Lyon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jerry Birkey. They’re both from Rock Rapids. In District 5, incumbent Kirk Peters of Little Rock is facing a challenge from Steve Herman of Rock Rapids. For the County Attorney chair, incumbent Shayne Mayer is facing a challenge from Melinda Folkens. They’re also both from Rock Rapids.

The lone Democratic candidate at the county level in northwest Iowa is Ken Kerkvliet, who is unopposed for his party’s nomination for Lyon County Supervisor, District 1.
