Northwest Iowa — This is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. Each day this week, the National Weather Service is focusing on a different severe weather topic.
Thursday’s topic is hail and wind safety.
We talked with Warning Coordination Meteorologist Peter Rogers from the Sioux Falls office, who gives us some information about staying safe during strong winds and hail.
Weather Service officials say a severe thunderstorm warning means either a severe thunderstorm is occurring, is detected by National Weather Service Doppler Radar, or a reliable report has been received. People in the WARNING area should take immediate action to protect their lives, the lives of others, and their property. Tornadoes can and occasionally do accompany severe thunderstorms. They say we should treat severe thunderstorm WARNINGS the same as we would a Tornado Warning by taking the proper safety precautions. Simply put, a WARNING means TAKE ACTION!
