Sheldon City Council Considers Changing Relationship With SCDC, Offering Lots For $1

Sheldon, Iowa — At their meeting this week, the Sheldon City Council heard about a proposal to change the working relationship with the Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation or SCDC.

SCDC Executive Director Tania Herrera Gonzales spoke on behalf of the SCDC, and introduced the topic.

Mayor Greg Geels says this would change the City and SCDC’s affiliation from a parent-child relationship to an older sibling-younger sibling relationship. The council voted to set a public hearing on the matter for November 6th.

The council also heard about a proposal to sell seven single-family residential lots in the Sheldon Crossing addition for $1 apiece. Herrera Gonzales explains.

Council Member Ken Snyder says he doesn’t like the idea.

Council member Brad Hindt says he thinks it’s a good idea.

The council was told that out of the 57 total lots, 30 remain unsold. The council voted to set a public hearing on the matter for the next regular meeting on November 6th.

The council also voted to approve the consent agenda at the meeting and approved a preliminary official statement about selling $3.7 million in General Obligation Capital Loan Notes for the Western Avenue project.

After the regular meeting open items, the council entered closed session for chief of police interviews and discussion / consideration of final candidates.
