Sheldon City Council To Consider Pilot Program With Childrens World At Wednesday Regular Meeting

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will meet in regular session at 4:30 p.m. this Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center across 9th Street from KIWA Radio.

On their consent agenda are the minutes from the previous meeting, the list of claims, and some financial reports. Unless a council member requests that an item be pulled out of the consent agenda to vote on separately, the entire consent agenda will be voted on in a single motion.

In old business is a report from Mid-Sioux Opportunity. Sheldon is served by two community action agencies, as it lies in two counties. The majority of the city is in O’Brien County, which is served by Upper Des Moines Opportunity. But the extreme western part of the city is in Sioux County, which is served by Mid-Sioux Opportunity. City Manager Sam Kooiker says Mid-Sioux personnel were not able to attend the January budget workshop and weather caused a postponement of their annual report, so they are coming before the council this Wednesday and asking for $1000 for fiscal year 2026, which is up from the $250 they’ve asked for in previous years.

Under new business, the council will consider the final pay estimate for the Oak Street project; hold a public hearing and consider a budget amendment for this fiscal year; hold a public hearing and decide whether to approve the agreements with Children’s World for the pilot program; and hold the first readings of ordinance amendments regarding the water system, the sewer system, and a storm water fee. A late addition to the agenda was made, which includes the expected approval of two applicants to the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team — SCAT.

They are also scheduled to hear about insurance renewals from Joel Gesink, hear a presentation from the Sheldon High School CAPS team regarding the arch they want to install at 421 3rd Avenue, and hear other city reports.

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers and is available on YouTube.
