Sheldon Council Approves New Maximum Property Tax Levy Rate

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council held a public hearing at their special meeting Wednesday on the subject of setting the Maximum Levy on real estate taxes for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

After the hearing, the Council voted unanimously to increase to Maximum Levy by not more than two-percent over this fiscal year’s amount. For the current Fiscal Year, the City’s budget includes revenues of $1,604,039 from real estate taxes on Sheldon real property. City officials say the projected new number for 21-22 is $1,623,105. That figure represents an increase in property tax revenues of one-point-one-eight percent.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting, Sheldon Police Officer David Dykstra was officially promoted to the rank of Sergeant, after taking the Oath of Office for the Sergeant’s position. Officer Todd Wood had also been scheduled to take the Oath of Office to become a Sergeant, but Mayor Greg Geels explained that Wood had been unable to attend Wednesday’s meeting.

The council gave the green light to Public Works Director Todd Uhl to apply for a FAST Act Grant for reconstruction of Western Avenue, from Highway 18 to 16th Street. Uhl told the council that, should the City be approved for that grant, the dollars for the project would be available in 2024. Uhl said he had talked with the Sioux County Engineer, who indicated that they would be interested in participating in a cost share for part of that project. Western Avenue is the boundary between Sioux and O’Brien Counties.

Uhl says the deadline for applying for a FAST Act Grant is March 26th.
