Sheldon Council To Tackle Widely Varied Agenda Wednesday

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will witness the swearing-in of a new police officer when they meet this Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers in the Sheldon Community Services Center.

Officer Greg Jacobsma was previously an officer with the Sanborn Police Department.

Among the items on the consent agenda, which are usually passed in a single all-encompassing motion are a liquor license renewal for Langer’s and a special event license for the Saturday of Celebration Days, a change order for Crossroads North Phase II, the authorization of an order of purchase for a pickup truck for the police department, and the approval of a route for the O’Brien County Snow Trackers for the upcoming snowmobile season.

City Manager Sam Kooiker says the reason approval is needed for the pickup is that they would be allocating the funds in a budget that hasn’t been developed yet, due to supply chain issues.

The paperwork continues on the $3.5 million in general obligation capital loan notes to provide funds to pay the costs of the new east side water tower. The council will consider a resolution that would accept a proposal to purchase the notes.

They will also consider the approval of plans and specs for the 2022 water system improvements, including bid opening and public hearing dates.

Kooiker tells us that Bethel Church has entered into a purchase agreement with a potential buyer for the site where the old church once stood. The sale of the property is contingent on the approval of the subdivision and development agreement. He says the proposed buyers will present their plan at this Wednesday’s meeting. According to Kooiker, while initial direction may be given by the council on Wednesday, this would not be final action.

The discussion about fireworks will also continue at the meeting. Sheldon Police Chief Scott Burtch will provide a report on his perspective. Several options exist from more enforcement to a ban. No ordinance change has been proposed for consideration at the meeting.

Wednesday’s meeting will be called to order at 4:30 in Council Chambers of the Sheldon Community Services Center. If you can’t attend in person, you can watch it via YouTube Live.
