Sheldon Council To Face Short, But Important Agenda At Their Meeting Wednesday

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City Council holds their first meeting of 2023 this Wednesday, they’ll face a short, but important agenda.

During Wednesday’s meeting, the Council will continue a discussion that began during their December 21st meeting. That discussion is on the City’s budget. Two important pieces of the budget are Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and Urban Renewal (TIF). Since Hotel/Motel Tax is also considered a Local Option Sales Tax, that is included, as well.

City Manager Sam Kooiker says the state projects a 3.5% drop in LOST revenue for the next fiscal year, which begins 7/1/23. Kooiker says he and City Clerk Angie Beckman will be recommending to the Council that they reduce projections accordingly during the next budget process. Kooiker says it’s his hope that the City of Sheldon will be insulated from this drop; saying it is better to follow the State’s recommendation and hope it is wrong, then to follow his own feeling and end up being wrong.

In other action at Wednesday’s meeting, the Council is scheduled to pass a resolution designating depositories of City funds, an item that is required by law each year. They’re also expected to discuss ongoing ordinance reviews to update the City Code. And, the Sheldon Fire Company’s fee adjustment for fire service with Grant Township in Sioux County.

Wednesday’s meeting begins at 4:30 in Council Chambers of the Sheldon Community Services Center. As always, the meeting is open to the public. If you can’t be there in person, you can watch the meeting via the City’s YouTube Live.
