Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council has a somewhat short agenda for their first regular meeting of 2023, but one that contains some important items of business.
When they meet Wednesday, the Council is expected to pass a resolution designating the financial institutions in which City funds will be deposited. This is an annual resolution that is required by Iowa law.
In other action, the Council will continue a discussion that was begun at their December 21st meeting, regarding Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) budgets, Urban Renewal/TIF funds and the Hotel/Motel Tax. According to the agenda, the state projects a 3.5% drop in LOST revenue for FY23-24, which begins 7/1/23. City Manager Sam Kooiker and City Clerk Angie Beckman are expected to recommend to the Council that the City reduce projections accordingly during the next budget process. Kooiker says it’s his hope that the City will be insulated from this drop, since it is better to follow the State’s recommendation and hope it is wrong, then to follow his own feeling and end up being wrong.
The Council is also scheduled to hear from Kooiker on the Fire Department fee adjustment for Grant Township in Sioux County, for service by the Sheldon Fire Company.
Wednesday’s meeting of the Sheldon City Council will be called to order at 4:30 pm in Council Chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center. If you can’t attend in person, you can also watch the meeting via the City’s YouTube Live channel.
