Sheldon, Iowa — This spring has been….unique….for lack of a better term. COVID-19 has played havoc with everything from businesses to churches to schools, with many activities postponed or outright cancelled.
One of the things that got pushed onto the back burner was high school graduations. Normally Sheldon Community High School holds their Commencement Exercises on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. This year, thanks to the pandemic, that did not happen. So the school district found other ways to honor their graduating seniors. There was a Senior Parade around Sheldon, yard signs bearing each senior’s name and photo that the seniors were given to post in the yards of their homes, just to name a few. Now, finally, an honest-to-goodness, Commencement Ceremony has been scheduled for the Sheldon High School Class of 2020.
Commencement in Sheldon is scheduled for Sunday, June 28th at 2:00 pm. Although Commencement normally takes place inside the high school in the O-Rena (Orab Gym), this year it has been moved outside to the Orab football field…..a more conducive location to maintain social distancing.
If Mother Nature sees fit to provide inclement weather that Sunday, the Sheldon Community Schools do have contingency plans. If the weather should be rainy on Sunday the 28th, they plan to try again on Tuesday June 30th at 7:00 at Orab Field. If Mother Nature is still uncooperative on Tuesday, the event will be moved inside the high school, with seniors and their families ushered into the O-Rena, five at a time in alphabetical order, to receive their diplomas.
Congratulations Sheldon Class of 2020. This is a senior year you’re sure to remember the rest of your lives.
