Sheldon, Iowa — One senior at Sheldon High School has received the Commended Student honor in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Makayla Van Voorst took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, also known as the PSAT, last year during her junior year. Shelby Bosma, a High School counselor, explains what the PSAT consists of.
When the results came in, Van Voorst found out she was one of 34,000 students who received Commendable Student nationwide. Van Voorst fell just under the next tier, which is 16,000 students who are finalists and receive a scholarship.
During Makayla’s senior year she is taking college classes and says she does have plans for after graduation.
KIWA would like to congratulate Van Voorst on her accomplishment.
