Sheldon, Iowa – The Sheldon Community Schools Board met in regular session on Monday, February 11th at 5:00 pm in the high school library.
Four Kindergarten students from East Elementary were present to share with their teacher, Mrs. Fitzgerald, on the use of iPads to effectively engage students in the educational process.
There were four open enrollments, three employee resignations and three contract offers presented for consideration, all of which were approved by the board. Additionally, the District is accepting applications for several immediate and anticipated openings. There is an immediate opening for the position of Elementary Special Education (PreK-4). The District is also looking to fill two K-4 Elementary Special Education position for the 2019-2020 school year and a High School Instructional Associate/Paraprofessional to work part-time with students in a guided study hall. There are three substitute positions and one coaching position open as well.
Superintendent Cory Myer advised the school board that the talks between the District and Children’s World regarding the partnership plan for preschool instruction are continuing. While there are still several items up in the air, the talks are progressing in a positive manner.
Myer also updated the Board on the District’s financial health. Overall, the District’s financial position is excellent, and there are no areas of significant concern. One item of note was that the Special Education Program fund is expected with a deficit balance anticipated for FY2019. This is attributed to an increase in services for special needs students, as well as staffing increases in order to meet student IEPs as required by the state.
The Board voted to move the Exempt Closed Session scheduled for the end of the Regular School Board Meeting with the Sheldon Education Association to this Wednesday, February 13th, at 5:00 pm at the High School. The School Board and the union representing the teachers in the Sheldon Community School District were scheduled to open discussion and set a negotiating strategy for their Initial Collective Bargaining Proposal to the Board for the 2019-2020 school year.
The next regular meeting of the Sheldon Community Schools Board has been set for Wednesday, March 12th at 5:00 pm in the High School Library.
