Sheldon School District Voters To Pick Three From Field Of Six School Board Candidates, Decide On Bond Issue

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon voters will be deciding the future when they go to the polls this Tuesday.

There are three seats available on the Sheldon Community School District Board of Education. But only one incumbent is running in a field of six candidates.

According to information from the O’Brien County Auditor’s office, only Jessica Brink filed for re-election. Also vying for the three available seats will be Jacob Bos, Heather Craig, Adam Sauer, Amy Sietstra, and Schuyler Vreeman.

Also on the ballot for voters in the Sheldon Community School District will be a ballot question asking if a $19.16 million bond issue should be approved for the Sheldon Community School District.

The text of the measure reads:

“Shall the Board of Directors of the Sheldon Community School District in the Counties of O’Brien, Osceola, Sioux, and Lyon, State of Iowa, be authorized to contract indebtedness and issue General Obligation Bonds in an amount not to exceed $19,160,000 to provide funds to be used together with sales tax bond proceeds to provide funds to remodel, repair, and improve the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems at the high school, with related remodeling and improvements; to build, furnish, and equip additions to the high school, with related remodeling and improvements; to remodel, repair, and improve the east and north side entries; and to make related site improvements?”

Superintendent Cory Myer tells us about what is planned.

Voters will be voting on a 19-million-dollar bond issue. The total project cost is $32.9 million. Myer says $19.16 million would come from the General Obligation (G.O.) Bond. District SAVE (statewide sales tax) funds, would be used to pay the remaining amount. Myer says they estimate the SAVE portion to be $13.74 million but they would put in place a resolution to allow the school board to use up to $15.56 million in SAVE funds if costs come in higher than anticipated.

Being a bond issue, the question needs not just a majority of “yes” votes, but a supermajority of 60 percent “yes” votes to pass.

City candidates and issues will also be decided this Tuesday. In Sheldon, according to the O’Brien County Auditor’s office, for the Ward 1 chair, Pete Hamill has filed for re-election. Brad Hindt has filed for re-election to his Ward 3 chair, and Shantel Oostra has filed for the at-large position and is running unopposed. Current City Council member Wayne Barahona did not file for re-election for the at-large seat.
