This time of year, ice anglers, snowmobilers, and ATV and UTV riders are reminded about the thickness — or thinness — of ice on area lakes and other bodies of water, and to check the ice conditions before heading out. But those kind of people aren’t the only ones who might venture out on some ice. Sometimes, unsupervised children may see what it’s like to walk on a frozen pond. And that can be dangerous, especially in the midst of the thawing temperatures we’ve been experiencing.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Tuesday that they had received a call about a juvenile walking on the pond near Avera Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids. The sheriff’s office says that the pond has multiple areas of open water and is not safe to walk on. The pond also has aerators, and if they are running, it will never freeze fully.
Sheriff’s officials say that thankfully, some people saw what was happening and asked the juvenile not to walk on the ice.
The sheriff’s office says ice can be fun, but let’s be safe. They urge parents to talk to their children about the dangers of walking on ice.
