UPDATE: Goal Is Crushed! – SHS Leadership Team Seeks Shoes For Soles For Souls

Sheldon, Iowa — When they began a shoe drive to benefit Soles for Souls a month and a half ago, the Sheldon High School Student Leadership Team were hopeful that their drive would generate 1500 pair of shoes for the charity. That goal was shattered at the high school alone.

Sheldon Community Schools Superintendent Cory Myer tells KIWA the final tally for the Soles for Souls shoe drive was 4,008-and-a-half pair of shoes. Myer says there were several donations that consisted of just one shoe, which led to the half-a-pair of shoes tally.

There was a friendly competition between Sheldon students, and the high school claimed top honors, collecting 1,877-and-a-half pair. At Sheldon Middle School the kids collected 1,263 pair of shoes, with East Elementary contributing 650 pair of shoes.

Myer says the remaining 217-and-a-half pair of shoes came from Village Northwest Unlimited, local churches, and community donations.

All of the donated shoes will be given to the group Soles for Souls, a group that gives shoes to individuals in under-developed countries who may not have shoes to wear. According to Barry Whitsell from Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon, Soles for Souls gives out a pair of shoes every seven seconds.

Sheldon, Iowa — The Student Leadership Team of Sheldon High School has organized a Shoe Drive that is set to begin this Monday, April first.

Student Leadership Team member Tori Fjeld says they’re partnering with Village Northwest Unlimited and Soles Four Souls to collect shoes for people who have none.

Madison Van Meeteren says there’s a friendly competition between teams of students in middle school and high school.

Leadership Team member Emma Barwick talks about the goal of the shoe drive.

Van Meeteren tells us how we can go about donating shoes.

Fjeld says they’re partnering with Village Northwest Umlimited.

The young ladies say the donated shoes don’t have to be new, they’ll accept any size, and any condition. They say if you only have one shoe you can donate that, as well. Again, the Sheldon High School Student Leadership Team Shoe Drive begins this Monday, April first, and continues through Friday, April twenty-sixth.

The need is real. The girls told KIWA that Souls For Soles puts a pair of shoes on somebody’s feet every seven seconds.
