Orange City, Iowa — The Sioux County Treasurer, Randy Jacobsma, died on Saturday, April 25th. A memorial service was held on Saturday.
We asked Sioux County Auditor and secretary of the Board of Supervisors, Ryan Dokter, what happens in a case like this. He tells us that when there becomes a vacancy of the Treasurer, the County Auditor (Dokter) takes over in the interim. He says the Sioux County Board of Supervisors decided to appoint a replacement.
Dokter tells us that at the May 19th Board of Supervisors’ Meeting, they will be doing interviews for the applicants interested in the position. He says they hope to appoint a treasurer at their meeting on Tuesday, May 26th.
The county political parties can certify a name to be on the ballot at the next countywide election. He says most likely, this will be taken care of during the General Election in November — unless a special countywide election is called for some reason or if there is a petition to hold a special election for the Treasurer’s seat. If that is the case, any names for the Treasurer position will be on that ballot instead.
Dokter said that the board decided to appoint rather than call a special election because of the expense of calling a special election, but that is an option as well.
