Sioux County Sheriff Issues Statement About Honoring And Remembering Officers During National Police Week

Northwest Iowa — This has been National Police Week in the United States. A part of the week is Peace Officers Memorial Day, which was Thursday.

Sioux County Sheriff Jamie Van Voorst has issued a statement on the occasion of Police Week. He says:

“In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.

This week is dedicated to remembering law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others, as well as to honor the men and women who currently serve in law enforcement and put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.”

Van Voorst says he hopes people take a moment to thank law enforcement officers for their courageous service and reflect and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in that service.

He says, “Here in Sioux County, we have some of the best. As always, I am honored to serve beside them, and I am forever proud of the work they do every day. Thank the living; honor the fallen.”
