Small Meat Processors In Sibley and Sutherland Get Grants From State Program

Des Moines, Iowa — Thirteen businesses will get state money this year from a fund designed to help small-scale meat processors. And establishments in Sibley and Sutherland are among them.

Iowa Economic Development Authority spokesperson Kanan Kappleman says the grants total more than 970 thousand dollars. They tell us that in our area Friedrichsen Meat Company LLC of Sutherland received $100,000 toward a $200,000 project; and Jakes Meat Market in Sibley received a grant in the amount of $30,209 toward a project that’s going to cost $60,418.

Kappleman says the money is often used for buying equipment.

Kappelman says the fund was created after the need was revealed for these type of processors when the large-scale meat processors were shut down during the pandemic. She says there are just a few requirements to get the grants.

There are also some limits on the amount of the grants.
