SmartAsset: Sioux County Tax Refunds Are The Largest In The State

Sioux County, Iowa — Families in Sioux County receive the largest average tax refunds in the entire state. That from a company that helps people make personal finance decisions.

SmartAsset.com says each tax season millions of U.S. taxpayers are issued refunds for the amount of money they overpaid within that tax year. Meanwhile, some taxpayers end up owing money to the IRS after filing their taxes because they underpaid throughout the year. SmartAsset analyzed data from the IRS to determine the counties where people received the highest average tax refunds and the counties where people owed the most money after filing their taxes.

To determine the counties that received the highest average refunds, they tell us they divided the total amount of money refunded by the IRS in each county by the number of refunds issued in each county. They say they did the same to calculate the average amount owed, by dividing the total taxes owed in each county by the number of filers that still owe taxes.

They tell us they then ranked and indexed each of the counties where residents receive the highest average refunds and where residents pay the most after filing their taxes.

SmartAsset tells us Sioux County refunds averaged over $3000 at $3119. Their ratio of those getting refunds to those owing taxes was 2.66 to 1. In O’Brien County, refunds averaged $2642. Their ratio was 2.84 refunds for every owing return. In Osceola County, their average refund was $2581. Their ratio of those getting refunds to those owing taxes was 2.94 to 1. And in Lyon County, refunds averaged $2849, with a ratio of those getting refunds to those owing taxes of 2.59 to 1.
