Regional and Statewide, Iowa – Voters in northwest Iowa will decide Tuesday who takes over Iowa House District 7, as a special election fills the seat vacated by longtime Rep. Mike Sexton of Rockwell City.
Sexton stepped down in September after being appointed director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development office in Iowa. He had served in the House since 2014, most recently chairing the Agriculture Committee.
District 7 covers Calhoun, Pocahontas, and Sac counties, along with part of Webster County. The winner of Tuesday’s election will serve the remainder of Sexton’s term, which runs through January 2027.
Two candidates, both from Odebolt, are on the ballot.
Republican Wendy Larson is a small business owner with a background in marketing. She has been active in her church and community, and won her party’s nomination at a convention in Rockwell City earlier this fall.
Democrat Rachel Burns is a longtime school speech-language pathologist. She has also served as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical services provider, holding certifications as both a firefighter and EMT.
Both candidates have received endorsements from local and regional figures, and each has emphasized ties to agriculture, education, and community service.
Early voting continues through Monday. Polls will be open 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday.
