Statewide Iowa — It’s August in Iowa, schools are about to begin a new year, and then, right around the corner will be Labor Day, the traditional end of summer. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau says this is one of the busiest travel times of the year with many people trying to squeeze in one more vacation destination. And to help keep Iowa roadways safe, the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with the Iowa State Patrol, along with many county sheriff and police departments across the state for a sTEP, or Special Traffic Enforcement Project in conjunction with the Labor Day holiday. That project begins later this week.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says special attention will be given to getting impaired drivers off the road during this period.
We asked Trooper Kurtz if the 40-percent figure was higher than normal.
He says that, while not wearing a seat belt won’t cause a crash, it does contribute to injury and fatality rates in crashes.
The Labor Day sTEP period runs from this coming Friday, August 17th, through Labor Day, September 3rd. Kurts reminds motorists that troopers, deputies, and local police will be out in force during this period, some in marked patrol cars, and others in unmarked patrol cars. Drive safe, buckle up, and if your celebration includes alcohol, please find a sober driver.
