State Offers Property Tax Credit For Elderly, Disabled

Northwest Iowa — It’s only January, and the second half of your property taxes are due in March. But if you’re elderly or disabled, it might be a good time to get some paperwork in order so the state can give you a hand in paying your property taxes next time.

The first installment of your property taxes in Iowa, if not paid by your mortgage holder, is due in September, with the second half due in March of the following year.

The program that helps the elderly and disabled with their property taxes is called the Iowa Property Tax Credit for Senior and Disabled Citizens, and you need to apply for it by June 1st of this year to receive the reduced rate for both semi-annual tax payments, starting in September.

Department of Revenue officials tell us you have to have been 65 or older, or totally disabled as of December 31st, 2020, and meet annual household low-income requirements. This year, your 2020 household income has to have been less than $24,206 to qualify. Those who are totally disabled need to have been at least 18 as of December 31st or at least 23 as of December 31st if you own and live in a mobile home.

Claims are to be filed with the county treasurer. The director or county treasurer may grant extensions of time to file.

If you got the credit last time, they’ll mail you a form. If not, you can contact your county treasurer’s office for more information.
