Sutherland, Iowa — Wrapping up the summer festivals, we have the last three. Sheldon Celebration Days, Hawarden’s Big Sioux River Days, and Sutherland’s Labor Day Celebration. Sutherland’s celebration starts this Saturday and runs through Labor Day Monday.
The Sutherland Legion will serve breakfast on Saturday from 7 to 9. The 5K Run/Walk starts at the Church of Christ at 203 South Oak Street at 8. Saturday afternoon at 2, there’s a Horseshoe and Bag Tournament at Sweeney’s Club House. From 5 to 7, there’s a Willoway Meal & Free Entertainment. Saturday’s festivities wrap up in Sutherland with a street dance on Main Street with the band “ROADHARD.”
Things get going on Sunday at 10 a.m. with a church worship service in City Park. You’re asked to bring your own lawn chairs. From 10:30 to 12:30, it’s lunch at the Masonic Lodge. You can register for the Salute Tractor Ride from 11 to noon. Also starting at 11 are the Cruise-in Car Show and the Chalk Art Contest. The burnouts start at 1 by Zub’s Shop, but you have to register if you’re going to participate. That can be done from ten to noon.
From 3 to 8 p.m. it’s the Car Cruise and Fun Run. Register between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. at Sweeney’s Clubhouse. From 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. it’s the Ham & Beef Supper at Bethel Lutheran Church. Meanwhile, the Church of Christ will be celebrating 100 years of worship, starting at 6. Then you can join your friends for a street dance at 9, featuring the Johnny Holm Band.
Labor Day Monday is the big day in Sutherland too. They start at 8 with a Sausage & Pancake Breakfast, which will be a fundraiser for Noah’s Ark Day Care at the Church of Christ. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Games and Bouncy Gyms will be available in City Park.
Lunch options are plentiful. You can have Creamed Turkey & Biscuits at the Methodist Church from 11 to 1. Those are the same hours for the Masonic Lodge’s Hot Dogs & Burgers in City Park. Pie & Ice Cream is available at the library from 11:15 to 2:30. It’s a fundraiser by the Friends of the Library.
At noon, it’s time to register for the volleyball and bean bag tournament in the park. That’s also the start time for the Willoway Open House and the pony rides in City Park. At 1, it’s the Saddle Club Fun Day & Horse Show. At 1:30 you can check out musical entertainment in the park with “L.D. Three Show Band.” At 2:30 p.m. it’s time for the kids’ races for all ages, and the festivities wrap up at 3 with free ice cream bars in the park.
