Spirit Lake, Iowa — The 2019 Iowa Legislative Session begins soon, and area legislators have been busy setting their priorities and making connections for when lawmaking gets underway. One of those is Iowa House District 1 Representative John Wills.
Wills serves Lyon and Osceola counties and the northern two-thirds of Dickinson County. Wills has also been selected to serve as Majority Whip in the Iowa House this year.
He tells us about that, and about his priorities for this legislative session.
To clarify, there have been over 40 amendments to the Iowa Constitution. What Wills is talking about is an amendment that would mirror the US Constitution’s Second Amendment about the right to keep and bear arms. He says that Iowa is one of “seven or eight states” that do not have a similar amendment that includes the right to keep and bear arms.
According to Wills, it’s not so easy to amend the Iowa Constitution. He tells us what needs to happen.
Wills tells us what the bill would do if passed by the legislature again and by Iowa citizens.
He tells us why he and other supporters of the proposed amendment believe that both the US and the Iowa Constitution need to guarantee the right to keep and bear arms.
Wills tells us that as Majority Whip, he’s aware that several issues will be discussed. He tells us some of them.
The 2019 session of the Iowa Legislature starts on Monday, January 14th at the statehouse in Des Moines.
