Sheldon, Iowa — Saturday evening’s final performance of the final show of the Sheldon High School Summer Theatre Season had to be postponed due to flooding caused by Saturday afternoon’s heavy rain.
Sheldon Community Schools Superintendent Cory Myer tells us what happened.
He says the flooding was discovered by Summer Theatre students and staff as they were arriving to prepare for their Saturday evening performance.
One theatre mom tells us that the theatre kids and staff sang songs and made the cleaning job as fun as possible. They borrowed squeegees from the Fire Department and formed squeegee lines, shoulder to shoulder as a team effort to get rid of the flood waters. The mom also tells us that during the course of the clean-up, Superintendent Myer brought in pizza for dinner.
Myer tells us that the kids turned what could have been a terribly negative situation into something positive.
The theatre mom we spoke to says that after they finished flood duty Saturday night the kids, not knowing if they’d be having a final performance, elected to hold their traditional cast party, at which point Myer came through with a second round of pizzas for the party.
While the kids were ready to go Saturday night, Myer says the high school was not.
He says the weekend’s drying activities have left the school suitable for the final performance of the Summer Theatre musical, Bright Star, which is set for Monday night at 8:00.
