ThermoCel Demolition Preparation Set To Begin Monday

Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon’s Iselin Avenue will be closed to through traffic beginning Monday morning to accommodate the demolition of a property the City of Sheldon has declared a nuisance property.

Setup for the demolition of the ThermoCel property will begin Monday morning, according to Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker, with the actual demolition scheduled to begin later in the week.

MidAmerican Energey has acquired this abandoned property and plans to invest significant resources in cleaning up the site and improving the neighborhood, according to Kooiker.

Kooiker says up to 200,000 gallons of water are estimated to be in the basement of the ThermoCel site, which will be treated on site and slowly discharged into the City’s sewer system via a manhole on Iselin Avenue. The water will be pumped out of the basement at the rate of approximately fifty gallons per minute, according to Kooiker.

MidAmerican Energy has hired GHD Services, Inc, to manage the demolition, with multiple contractors involved. Kooiker says two buildings will be removed, including the main brick ThermoCel building, as well as a Quonset hut to the south of the ThermoCel site on the east side of Iselin Avenue.

Kooiker says it’s anticipated that the demolition project will be completed by early to mid November.
